Game: LEAVING THE HOMELAND

In the early days people came to Australia from many other lands just as they do today. Before they left they visited all their friends and relatives to say goodbye. On signal everyone runs around and shakes hands with as many people as possible. Each person keeps their own count (honesty) and must shake hands properly (self-discipline).

It was a long journey and people were on the ship for many months. One Six lines up in their corner. Rest form a circle with a Leader or Cub Scout in the center with the basketball. On signal, the ball is thrown from center to a Cub Scout who returns it to the center, The ball continues to next person and so on around the circle while outside team takes turns to run around the circle. Game FISHING

Equipment: Fishing lines, magnetic fish and Boomerang questions attached to the fish. (See drawing next page.) You will need as many fishing lines as there are leaders. Also about 10 colour-coded fish per Boomerang group. Make paper fish with the question attached with a paper clip. Set out each pile (rods and 3 Boomerang sets) in a suitable place in the hall. Cub Scouts form one long line. On signal, first in line runs and picks up a rod and catches a fish suited to their own Boomerang level. Takes rod and fish to a Leader who reads out written question on the fish. When answered returns rod to pile. Cub Scout at head of line runs whenever there is a Leader free to ask a question. This keeps the line moving and there is no hold-up (or embarrassment) if someone is a bit slow.

Use fishing poles etc in the leaders room

Acting Activity : WHAT AM I DOING?

People had to provide their own entertainment on ships. Singing, dancing and acting was very popular. Form two, three or four circles depending on the size of Pack and number of Leaders. Each circle has a stick, which is passed around. When a Leader gives the signal the person with the stick has to act with it e.g. Walking stick, fishing rod, oar, broom, back scratcher, straw, pen etc.

Stick or dowel about 1 meter long.

Game: PACK THE FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE - Nesting.

Sixes, one in each corner of the hall, have a small circle drawn in front of each of them. A larger circle is drawn in the centre of the hall. Put a dozen or so blocks in the centre circle. On 'go' the first four boys run to bring back one block at a time and put it in their own circle. When all the blocks have gone from the centre, the Cubs can take the blocks, one at a time, from anyone else's circle. At a given signal, they all must stop. The blocks are counted and the six with the most scores a point. Keep going until all the boys have had a go.

.20 GAME: HARBOUR BRIDGE OPERA HOUSE

"We have travelled through the outback of Queensland down

to New South Wales, through dry plains and sheep stations

before making our way back to the coast and onto Sydney."

themselves into a human 'Harbour Bridge' or 'Opera House'.

They can use only simple props such as a chair, box or rope.

(The best effort could receive a small prize.)

GAME: FOOTY

"We travel down the coast to Victoria and call in at some of the lonely beaches on the way. We notice the weather is getting cooler as we travel South. We pass through tall forests, dairy farms and big industrial towns. Then we arrive at Melbourne and decide we must take in one of those famous football matches." Have a large cardboard square with three circles drawn on it. Cut the centre one out, and have a plastic flap behind it (This circle will need to be approximately 35cm in diameter). Draw a number 10 on the flap; a five in the next circle and a two in the outer circle. Stand the board on two chairs. On a blackboard have a list of the names of the League Teams Line the Cubs up, 2..5 to 3.5 metres from the 'target' board (use about three or four footballs to keep the game moving) maybe some of the boys could bring along a football). Each Cub in turn handballs the football at the target and, at the same time, he calls out the name of his favourite football team. A leader keeps score and puts the appropriate score beside the team name that has been called out. After his shot the Cub runs to the end of the line. If there is time have two or three goes each. At the end of the time add up the scores to see which team are 'Premiers'.

GAME: APPLE STALK

"We board the Empress of Australia. This takes our four- wheel drive over Bass Strait to beautiful Tasmania. We will see beautiful forests and mountain ranges and are lucky enough to be in time for the apple harvest. Tasmania is sometimes called the 'Apple Isle Draw a large rosy apple on paper or cardboard. Each Cub is given a 'stalk', make these from brown paper with a piece of 'Blue Tac' or sticky tape on the back. The Cubs are blind folded, then, in turn, they are asked to put their stalk' here they think it should be, have the Cubs names on the stalks' for easier sorting out later. The Cub with the stalk ' nearest the right place, wins. A rosy red apple would be an appropriate prize.

GAME: OPALMINING

"We are once again on the mainland, this time heading for South Australia. We take in the sights of Adelaide, then out into the country. A quick look at the vineyards and then onto the opal fields." During the last game a leader has hidden brightly coloured toffees round the room - one for each Cub. On 'go', see which six is the first to find their 'opals' and return to their six. The wrapping paper could be the same colour as their six to make it just that much more difficult. Save the toffees until supper.

GAME: CYCLONE

"We now set off for Western Australia; across the sandy desert country till we arrive at Perth. Then we head north up the coast. It is here we are caught in a savage cyclone. It comes sweeping in from the Indian Ocean." Cubs stand round the hall touching the walls. A Leader calls 'Cyclone coming in from the sea'. The Cubs make noises like howling wind. The Leader calls 'Cyclone hits the land'. The Cubs then run round the hall making as much noise as possible. At a given signal they must stop dead, fall on the floor and stay still. The last one down is out. This can be played to the end or just run through a few times according to time.
